the “Gay” Community with the Gospel

The photos I have included here were taken at the San Diego 2017 “Pride” Parade last Saturday. These are tame compared to the hundreds of vile and disturbing photographs and videos produced and posted on the internet following the parade and other various events. I have included the images of the “gay” Marines and “gay” Navy Chief Petty Officer marching in the parade. There were many “gay” enlisted men and women, as well as “gay” officers marching in the parade in uniform. I am deeply troubled and saddened by this and see the desperate need for a Gospel outreach to these military men and women. Let us pray that the Lord opens many doors to us that we, as God’s people, might have opportunity to reach these folks with the saving Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.

I once heard the testimony of a fellow who had been caught up in the “gay” lifestyle for several decades. He stated that he had rejected out of hand the Gospel message because of men like Steven Anderson of the Faithful Word Baptist Church, and others, who overtly speak of their hatred for homosexuals. Anderson was quoted as saying, "I do hate homosexuals and if hating homosexuals makes our church a hate group then that's what we are.” He has openly stated that homosexuals ought to be killed and prayed, for example, that transgender Caitlyn Jenner’s heart would explode. Truly born-again people do not talk or behave in this manner. Men like this have done inestimable damage with their unscriptural approach to homosexuals, making it difficult for those of us who wish to reach “gay” men and women with the Gospel. When those who profess to be Christians and preachers of the Word of God make these kind of statements, the very people that we ought to be reaching for Christ will be alienated from the truth and pushed away. The late Brother Joe Hill, former director of the Emmanuel Baptist Rescue Mission in Los Angeles, used to say that we who are saved need to love the lost sinner into the arms of Jesus. Indeed!
Several years ago, I was conducting a missions conference for a church in Chugiak, Alaska. During the course of the week, I engaged in door-to-door evangelism with one of the men of the church serving as my partner for this Saturday morning endeavor. Being close to Joint Base Elemendorf-Richardson, home to various Air Force, Army, Navy, and Coast Guard units, we ended up knocking on doors in a housing complex occupied by a large number of active duty Air Force enlisted personnel. It was a bitterly cold day, so we were not able to spend much time on the doorstep speaking to those folks who answered the door. But at one house we visited that scenario rapidly changed.
When the door opened I announced who we were, what church we were from, and the reason for our visit. The man answering the door became highly agitated as he angrily berated us and said he knew all about we "hateful, mean-spirited, unpatriotic" Baptists. We were shocked by his vehemence. Then he gave the reason for his obvious disdain for Baptists when he equated us by association with the late Fred Phelps and the repugnant Westboro Baptist Church, that infamous non-church that hatefully pickets military funerals with their twisted and fallacious belief that those honorable military personnel who gave their lives for our country died as a result of God's judgment because of America's acceptance and tolerance of homosexuality, same-sex marriage, and all that goes along with “diversity.” No question that God must judge any nation that allows perversion in any form, but to say that God ordains that our valiant military men and women be killed to recompense the sins of America goes way too far for this preacher. Indeed, this is sheer insane reasoning without a scintilla of Scriptural support.
I asked this good Air Force Master Sergeant for a hearing, which he was willing to extend to me. I was able to explain that Fred Phelps and his evil minions in no way represented Baptist people in particular, nor any truly born-again Christians in general. Indeed, I informed him that I was a Navy veteran, and the church where I was preaching that week had many members who were either active duty or retired military personnel. This calmed this good man down to the degree that I was able to clarify things for him, and then share the Gospel with him. When we left his home he thanked us for our visit, and said that he would let his squadron mates know that Westboro was a rogue non-church that was not in any way representative of biblical Christianity. There had apparently been much discussion amongst these military men and women as they saw in the news the satanic and disgusting activities of Fred Phelps and company.

Now, with all of that said, I have been asked a number of times how we as God's people ought to deal with and approach the LGBTQ "community." The simple answer is this. Just as we would approach any other poor lost sinner in need of salvation in and through the finished work of the cross. Many men and women who have long-practiced and engaged in the sodomite aberration, something that God clearly condemns as an abomination (Leviticus 20:13), have been gloriously and wonderfully saved. Indeed, we have a family member who was saved and delivered from the sin of homosexuality after he came to Christ and has not returned to that lifestyle (better seen as a “deathstyle”).
Demographically we are told there are over 9 million "gays" in America, but I believe that to be a conservative number. I am convinced that the number is far greater with many men and women living double lives who have not yet declared their homosexual proclivity. I have seen the "gay community" as a vast and untapped mission field, and we who know the Lord Jesus Christ must see the need to reach out to these lost men and women who are in desperate need of the Saviour. The "in-your-face" nasty confrontational tactics that have been employed by misguided people who say they love the souls of men while at the same time displaying anything but love for the sodomite only serves to push them away and give them the ammunition they need to reject the message as they reject the tactics of the messenger. The soul-winner does not have to give affirmation to the wickedness of sodomite behavior, nor water down what God has to say about it, but we must speak the truth in love. I would remind you that Christ died for ALL men, "For ALL have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). Christ died for the sins of the sodomite just as He died for the sins of the drunkard, the adulterer, the extortioner, the covetous, the murderer, the rapist, and ALL of mankind. Indeed, "There is NONE righteous, no, not one" (Romans 3:10). What applies to ALL men applies to the sodomite as well. "But God commendeth his love toward us (ALL OF MANKIND), in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). Indeed, it is written that, "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but us longsuffering to us-ward, no willing that ANY should perish, but that ALL should come to repentance" (II Peter 3:9).
Does God hate the sin of sodomy? Absolutely! But what sin does He not hate? Now, someone says, “But, preacher, don’t you know that the Bible says in Romans 1:24-28 that God has given the sodomite over to a reprobate mind?” Indeed, the Word of God makes it abundantly clear that those given over to these “vile affections” can and will become reprobate if they do not repent and turn to Christ. This can be said of any sin in any form when men refuse to repent, turn from their sin, and place their full and absolute trust in Christ as their Saviour.
I Corinthians 6:9-11 clarifies for me that the homosexual can indeed be wonderfully saved and delivered from his sinful lifestyle. “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such WERE some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:9-11). There is no question that sodomite practices were common in Corinth, but when the “effeminate” and “abusers of themselves with mankind” came to Christ, the Word of God makes it clear that they were delivered from their sinful lifestyle and no longer engaged in their former behavior. “Such WERE (past tense) some of you.”
Here in our area of the country, just as was the case in major cities all over America, San Diego was host to the "Pride Weekend" and the San Diego "Pride" Parade and "Pride" Music Festival. "America's Finest City" is home to one of the largest "gay" communities in the country. Over 200,000 showed up for the "Pride Parade" on Saturday. Yesterday I watched highlights from the parade on YouTube with what I viewed bringing me to tears. It set up a spirit of mourning in my heart. I hurt deeply for those I personally know who are caught up in the “gay” lifestyle, people I care about. Disgust because of the immoral spectacle I witnessed on the You Tube clip, yes, but tears of compassion and heartache as "mine eye affecteth mine heart." This is all a symptom of a far greater problem, and that is the continuing decadence and sin-sickness of a nation that has forgotten God days without number. This is but one symptom among many, many more, and there is no question that America's days are numbered as sin has become a reproach to us as a people. Has America become another Babylon? Has she become another Sodom and Gomorrah? Has she become a libertine society saturated with sinful indulgence that is a stench in the nostrils of God? You be the judge.
The answer? Jesus Christ IS the answer, and the ONLY answer!
